Caravan2Cash — caravan and motorhome buyers

Should I spend money servicing a caravan or motorhome before selling it?

The short answer

Get a valuation first. A service, habitation check or MOT arranged purely to sell rarely returns its cost, and any work it uncovers is then yours to pay for. Low-cost presentation — cleaning, airing, clearing it out — is worth doing; paid work usually is not.

Worth doing

  • Clearing out, cleaning and airing the vehicle
  • Charging or reconnecting a battery so systems can be demonstrated
  • Finding the paperwork you already have
  • Taking honest photographs, including of faults

Usually not worth doing before a valuation

  • A service or habitation check arranged only for the sale
  • A fresh MOT on a motorhome you are not using
  • Damp repairs, panel work or appliance replacement
  • New accessories bought to make the vehicle more appealing

Why the order matters

Once you know what the vehicle is worth as it stands, you can judge whether any spend makes sense. Doing it the other way round means committing money without knowing whether it changes anything — and with damp or mechanical work, the final bill is often well above the first estimate.

If you are keeping it a while longer

This answer is about selling. If you intend to carry on using the vehicle, normal servicing and habitation checks remain sensible maintenance regardless of resale value.
