Finance and payments

Outstanding finance is normal and it is not a barrier to selling. What matters is knowing who the agreement is with and what the settlement figure is on the day, because the vehicle cannot transfer clear of the agreement until the lender has been settled.

There are two usual shapes. Where the agreed figure is above the settlement, the finance is cleared and the balance goes to you. Where it is below, the difference has to be made up before the sale can complete. Neither case is unusual and both are better discussed early than discovered late.

We describe our own process here and point to the lender and to independent guidance for anything that is genuinely a financial or contractual question for you.

When should I receive payment for my caravan or motorhome?

The short answer

Payment is arranged at collection, once the vehicle has been inspected, the paperwork signed and identity confirmed. You should never be asked to release a vehicle or its documents on a promise of payment later — by us or by any private buyer.

What to expect

  • Transfer set up at collection, not days afterwards
  • Confirmation of the amount and the account before it is sent
  • Bank clearing times can still apply, depending on your bank

Should I settle the finance before asking for a valuation?

The short answer

No need. Ask for a valuation first and request a settlement figure from your lender at the same time, so you can see both numbers together. Settling early with your own money, before you know what the vehicle is worth, can leave you short.

What to have to hand

  • Lender name and agreement number
  • Current settlement figure and the date it is valid to
  • Whether the agreement is hire purchase, conditional sale or a personal loan — a personal loan is not secured on the vehicle
