Is part exchange better than selling my caravan or motorhome outright?
The short answer
Part exchange is convenient when you are buying another vehicle from the same dealer, but the figures are usually bundled, so it can be hard to see what you were given for your old one. Selling outright separates the two numbers and shows you exactly where you stand.

Why bundled figures are hard to read
In a part exchange, the allowance for your vehicle and the discount on the new one move together. A generous-looking allowance can sit alongside a smaller discount, so the only number that really tells you anything is the amount you have to find overall.
Ask for the figures separately — the price of the new vehicle and the allowance for yours — so you can compare the allowance against what you could achieve on its own.
When part exchange suits you
- You are buying immediately and want one transaction
- You would rather not store or insure the old vehicle in the meantime
- The dealer is taking on a vehicle with faults you would rather not describe repeatedly
When selling outright suits you
- You are not replacing the vehicle
- You want to know exactly what your caravan or motorhome was worth
- You want the sale settled before committing to anything else
- There is outstanding finance you would rather settle cleanly
