Does motorhome layout affect resale value?

The short answer

Layout strongly affects who wants the motorhome. Fixed rear beds, island beds and two-berth layouts with a large washroom appeal to a wide audience, while six-berth family layouts with bunks suit fewer buyers. Layout is weighed alongside length, payload, berths and travelling seats.

Layout features buyers ask about

  • Fixed rear bed, island bed or drop-down bed
  • Washroom size and whether the shower is separate
  • Number of berths against the number of belted travelling seats
  • Garage space, payload and overall length
  • Cab seats that swivel into the lounge

Why body style matters too

Low-profile and coachbuilt vans suit different buyers from A-class or over-cab models, and overall length decides which sites, storage yards and driveways will take the vehicle. A long A-class can be harder to place than a compact coachbuilt, even in better condition.

What still matters more

  • Damp readings and habitation condition
  • Mileage, MOT status and mechanical history
  • Whether the vehicle starts, drives and stops properly

Weights, payload and the base vehicle underneath

Layout only works if the weights allow it. A six-berth conversion on a 3,500kg chassis can leave very little payload once water, gas, an awning and passengers are on board, and buyers who need a heavier plated chassis look for that specifically.

The base vehicle matters alongside the layout: a Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit, Peugeot Boxer or Mercedes Sprinter underneath affects servicing costs, parts availability and how confident a buyer feels about a longer trip.

  • Plated maximum weight from the V5C or the chassis plate
  • Payload left once the vehicle is loaded for travel
  • Whether the chassis is standard, Maxi or an uprated plating
  • Base vehicle make, engine size and gearbox type
