Do caravan extras such as solar panels and awnings add value?

The short answer

Useful, well-fitted extras can help, because they save the next owner buying them. An awning in good condition, a solar panel, a motor mover or a fitted tracker are all worth mentioning. Extras rarely return what they cost, and a poor installation can count against the caravan.

Extras worth telling us about

  • Awning, with its poles, pegs and condition
  • Solar panel and charge controller
  • Motor mover
  • Air conditioning or upgraded heating
  • Tracker or alarm, and any storage-site requirement it satisfies
  • Bike rack, gas bottles, levelling aids and a spare wheel

Why extras rarely return their cost

The caravan itself sets the value. An extra can make one caravan easier to sell than an otherwise identical one, but the next owner is buying a used fitting, not a new one, so the amount it adds is much smaller than the purchase price.

Fitting quality matters too. Drilled panels, untidy wiring or a roof fitting that has been sealed badly can create doubt about water ingress, which works against you.

Should you buy extras before selling?

No. Buying accessories to improve a sale almost never pays for itself. Ask for a valuation first, and only then decide whether anything is worth doing.

Should you spend money fixing this before selling?
